Weighing-in On Longevity: One Pound at a Time
Over-weight adults age 70-plus have a pound-for-pound longevity advantage over thinner age peers, according to a life-expectancy study reported in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.
Compare weighty 70-plus year olds with their thinner counterparts over a ten year period, and the overweight adults are most likely to show up for the celebration party. Normal weight adults die sooner. Go figure.
9,200 Australian men and women aged between 70 and 75 at the beginning of the study, who were assessed for their health and lifestyle as part of a study into healthy aging. Australia is ranked the third most obese country, behind the U.S. (#1) and the UK (#2).
Medically overweight, most often called clinical obesity is measured by one's body mass index (BMI). BMI is calculated by dividing your weight by the square of height. Obesity is associated with morbidity (illness) and mortality (death) risks in younger and middle-aged adults. Interestingly, this association does not hold true to those age 70-plus who live 13% longer lives.
Based on the study by Professor Leon Flicker, University of Western Australia, the "BMI thresholds for overweight and obese are overly restrictive for older people." Hmmm. On second thought, I WILL have dessert with my OutBack Steak House meal?
Participants who died before the conclusion of the study appear to have died from heart disease or cancer, not anything directly related to being overweight. However, being overweight and sedentary increased the risk of death by 100% in women and only 25% in men.
