Que Age-Page Tan Lindo, Gracias NIA
Professor David J. Demko
What do America's increasing population of nearly two million Hispanic elderly need most? Health information. Authoritative, timely, and practical. Thanks to the National Institute on Aging (NIA), help is on the way. The key ingredient to maintaining one's health is prevention, staying healthy. An a new NIA publication will help these elders do just that.
Reliable information on diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep problems, medication safety, and foot care is available in Spanish from the National Institute on Aging. Five new "Age Pages" describe how to recognize and treat these conditions, which are common in older people. Also provided are up-to-date addresses and phone numbers for additional resources on health and health care.
The free, scientifically-based leaflets are written for older adults but also are useful to family members and health professionals who care for older adults. The "Age Page" on diabetes talks about how Hispanic Americans are at very high risk for type-2 diabetes, which is most common in adults over age 40 years.
The Age Page further identifies the following symptoms of diabetes.
- Feeling thirsty
- Frequent urination
- Weight loss
- Feeling tired
- Blurred vision
Untreated diabetes can damage eyes, kidneys, nerves, and heart. The good news is that diet, exercise, and medication can help prevent or delay the complications of diabetes.
For single or bulk copies of these Age Pages, call the NIA Information Center at: 1-800-222-2225 or TTY at 1-800222-4225. An information specialist will be available to respond to queries in Spanish.
