68 Year Old Cyclist: active lifestyle profile
AgeVenture News Service

Two years ago, 68 year old Leo (photo) completed a 600-mile bike ride in 11 days, from Half-Moon Bay, southwest of San Francisco to Palm Desert, in Southern California. Not bad for a retiree. Sort of fits the profile of today's active senior.

However, what makes Leo's feat extraordinary is that in 1977, he was diagnosed with Adult Onset Type II diabetes. He began taking oral medication, but eventually had to take two insulin shots a day.

After relocating to a retirement community, Leo took an interest in biking. Little did he know that a year later, as a result of his riding, his insulin requirements would be cut nearly in half.

Leo wanted to let others know about the benefits of exercising and decided to ride from the San Francisco area back to his home City Palm, Desert. The ride took 11 days and Weil rode up to 50 miles a day. Today, he is training for a trip in Europe.

According to Leo, his role models are those who keep testing their limits by pushing the enevelope. This Cincinnati, Ohio native is an alumnus of the University of Missouri and the Kemper Military School. Perhaps that explains this active senior's determination.

These days, Leo is taking full advantage of all life has to offer.
